I, too, have dreams. I am enlisted until my sixty-ninth birthday. I have yet to have a birthday party since my twenty-fourth (the night that landed me in all this trouble), but I will be celebrating my seventieth atop two of the boulder islands of the north Pacific, just enough room for a house on one and a cabin on the other, which I will operate as a bed and breakfast. And every dawn, I will kayak over the morning meal — a metal tray and dome battened to the bow — paddling to my guests’ bedroom balcony to say, “Lookie-loo what the tide’s washed in.”
